Odoo Foreign Currency Accounting: Why Exchange Gain/Loss Looks Wrong
A foreign-currency invoice can look correct while the payment, receivable, payable or exchange gain/loss still seems wrong. The fix usually starts with the rate, date and settlement trail.
FX gain/loss usually looks “wrong” because two values are being compared at different rates.
For a foreign-currency receivable or payable, the functional-currency value can change between the original recognition date and later settlement or reporting dates.
Original recognition
The invoice is recorded using the applicable exchange rate for the transaction date under the configured accounting process.
Reporting or revaluation
An outstanding foreign-currency balance may have a different reporting value when the rate changes.
Settlement
When the invoice is paid, the actual settlement amount can differ from the amount originally recognized in functional currency.
Accounting result
The difference becomes an FX gain or loss based on the transaction and the configured accounting treatment.

Later rate increases the functional-currency value.

Settlement can occur at a rate different from the rate used when the invoice was originally recognized. The difference is not automatically an error.

An outstanding monetary balance can change in functional-currency terms as the exchange rate moves. Review whether a period-end revaluation or similar adjustment was posted.

A clean FX investigation moves from source transaction → exchange rate → settlement/reporting event → journal entry.
Read the original invoice
SourceConfirm currency, amount, invoice date, due date, customer/vendor and the functional-currency amount recognized.
Check the rate path
RateCompare the relevant transaction, reporting and settlement dates. The rate itself is often where the apparent mismatch becomes understandable.
Check what happened before payment
EventDetermine whether the outstanding balance was revalued at a reporting date before it was settled.
Tie the FX entry back to the ledger
AccountingReview the resulting gain/loss journal and confirm that the amount, date, account and related receivable/payable movement make sense together.
Realized vs. unrealized FX
Businesses often mix these concepts when troubleshooting a month-end report. The cleanest approach is to ask whether the foreign-currency monetary balance has actually been settled.
€10,000 invoice → USD reporting
The example shows why the exchange difference exists. The actual accounting presentation depends on the configured process and transaction facts.
Five things to check before calling the FX result “wrong”
Wrong date
Comparing rates from different transaction dates.
Wrong direction
Reading the quoted rate in the opposite currency direction.
Skipped revaluation
Not accounting for an outstanding monetary balance at reporting date.
Wrong account
The amount is right but the gain/loss lands in an unexpected account.
Manual override
A manual journal or adjustment changes the FX trail.

Foreign-currency questions
Why does Odoo show a foreign exchange gain or loss? +
A foreign-currency monetary balance can have a different functional-currency value when the exchange rate changes between recognition, reporting and settlement. The resulting difference can be recognized as an exchange gain or loss under the configured accounting process.
What should I check when Odoo FX gain/loss looks too high? +
Check the foreign-currency amount, original rate, settlement rate, reporting-date rate, transaction dates, prior revaluation or adjustment entries and the accounts used for the resulting difference.
What is the difference between realized and unrealized FX? +
Realized FX generally relates to a foreign-currency balance that has been settled. Unrealized FX generally refers to changes in the functional-currency value of an outstanding foreign-currency monetary balance at a reporting date.
Can exchange-rate changes affect my Balance Sheet even when no payment was made? +
Yes. An outstanding foreign-currency monetary balance can change in functional-currency terms as exchange rates move, so reporting-date accounting may change the Balance Sheet and the related exchange gain/loss.
